Timbre! (Via Science) Researchers at Johns Hopkins University have developed a computer model that mimics -- with 99% accuracy -- our brains' abilities to discern timbre, a "hard-to-quantify concept loosely defined as everything in music that isn't duration, loudness or pitch. For instance, timbre comes into play when we are able to instantly decide whether a sound is coming from a violin or a piano."
One application of the research could help to improve the accuracy of digital transcription and midi conversion software.
